FED: Poll predictable: coalition MPs =2

Mr Smith said he thought Dr Nelson could claw back to an election-winning position.

"Absolutely I do," he said.

"I mean three years ago if a Labor member had stood here and said we're going to win
the next election, you would have laughed at them."

Liberal frontbencher Peter Dutton said he thought Dr Nelson was doing a good job.

"I think most Australians would say we want to see who this guy is, give him a fair go," he said.

Opposition small business spokesman Steven Ciobo said the Australian people would eventually
see the gloss wear off Mr Rudd and Treasurer Wayne Swan.

But asked if Dr Nelson would still be Liberal leader in a year's time, Mr Ciobo said:
"Who knows what we'll all be doing in a year's time."
